Job Description

Join IWMI's team in Uzbekistan as a National Researcher Climate Risk Specialist and you will work with global datasets including remote sensing information systems to understand climate impacts, risks and vulnerability at different scales in the Central Asia region. The specialist will develop downscaling and bias correction models and methodologies and calibrate them to ensure meaningful application at different spatial scales. You will also support development of climate risk and vulnerability profiles at national and regional scales and to provide inputs to technical and other reports. You will also assist in developing climate change future scenarios for assigned projects and also contribute to writing donor reports and research publications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect, collate and analyze data for climate vulnerability and risk assessments
  • Pre-process primary data and integrate with global datasets
  • Address the spatial scale gap between global climate models and the necessary fine-scale regional models
  • Develop, test, and simulate climate data downscaling predictions and evaluations and assist in calibrating and validating global circular models
  • Produce high-resolution climate datasets using dynamical downscaling and statistical bias correction and provide dynamical downscaling of climate change and weather extremes
  • Assist in providing climate data collation, information, maps and other support towards data-base maintenance and prepare both current and scenario analysis
  • Screen available climate risk data such as droughts, floods, extreme temperatures and prepare climate risk profiles
  • Provide extensive technical support on developing climate resilient solutions to deal with climate shocks, primarily floods and droughts
  • Study the effects of present and future climate on climate smart interventions
  • Provide specialist advice on physical climate risk management pertaining to technical interventions
  • Provide recommendations and develop guidance documents on climate risk and vulnerability management
  • Develop capacity building training modules and awareness raising activities on climate vulnerability and risk management for the project.
  • Support design of a web-based platform for climate analysis and early warning systems
  • Organize stakeholder consultations and meetings and disseminate research findings
  • Prepare briefs and reports on climate risk and vulnerability assessments, write progress reports of the modeling work, and contribute to donor and other project reports

The successful candidate will posses the following:

  • PhD degree in climate, meteorology, hydrology or a related environmental discipline
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in climate models assessments and climate risk assessments in the Central Asia region.
  • A good record of peer reviewed publications on relevant subjects
  • Ability to downscale global circulation models and remove uncertainties in circulation patterns.
  • High level of proficiency with specialist software for statistical design and quantitative analysis and hydrological modelling as well as Windows and MS Office
  • Ability to use advanced spatial analysis and Geographic Information Systems tools and climate modeling approaches for multiple scale assessments.
  • Ability to use advanced tools and modeling approaches for multiple scale assessments
  • Experience extracting and analyzing datasets and information from various sources for data scarce regions
  • Experience preparing high quality reports and publications
  • Demonstrated original thinking, creativity and innovation applied to his/her discipline
